Govt of Bangladesh cancels general holiday on 15 August
The public holiday on August 15, originally set to observe a national day of mourning, has been called off.
The interim government made this decision during an advisory council meeting held at the state guest house Jamuna on Tuesday.
Sources indicate that the cancellation was decided upon following extensive discussions and agreement among political parties.
The advisory council confirmed this consensus in today’s meeting, and the cabinet division will soon release an official gazette notification.
The previous administration, led by Sheikh Hasina, had designated August 15 as a national day of mourning.
On Monday, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the interim government, met separately with representatives from various political groups, including the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), BASAD, Jatiya Mukti Council, AB Party, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), and two factions of Gono Odhikar Parishad.
During these meetings, opinions varied on the observance of August 15 as a mourning day. Some parties supported the idea of canceling the mourning day, while others opposed the change.
